ECINS assists in Safeguarding a Child at risk of FGM

February saw the conviction of the first person in the UK to be found guilty of female genital mutilation.

Despite being outlawed in the UK by the Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act 1985, which made it an offence to perform FGM on children or adults, the conviction this month is only the fourth FGM prosecution brought to court in the UK.

There is an estimated three million girls and women worldwide who are at risk each year of FGM with about 125 million victims estimated to be living with the consequences.

Peterborough PRS were instrumental in safeguarding a child thought to be at risk of FGM and were able to use information gathered through their work on ECINS to help to ensure their safety.
